Embracing the Mess

The other day, I was talking to one of my daughters who was sharing her desire to embrace the messiness of life.

Since that chat, I’ve found myself thinking about this idea because, let’s face it, life is messy!

Yet we so often put expectations on ourselves to be pristine, perfect, unruffled.

Can you relate?

Do you find yourself compulsively cleaning before a friend comes over? Or self-conscious about the way you’re eating? Wanting to look neat and delicate.

Perhaps it’s time for a reframe.

The first question to ask yourself is, do I want to be actively immersed in my life or stand on the sidelines?

Because here’s the truth:

Creativity is Messy

Ever been in a ceramic studio or a farm? Notice what they look like? Yeah, stuff everywhere- dust, dirt, half-finished projects, etc. Everything is in the process of becoming. In other words, you are looking at the act of creation itself.

Think about when you do a craft, there’s materials strewn all around! Paper, glue, scissors, paints, all to make one specific item, right? Even if you’re placing flowers in a vase, cooking a meal, the list goes on and on…

Here’s the alternative - what would your life be like if you didn’t create?

Engaging in Life is Messy

My brother is an interior designer. Decades ago, when I lived in an apartment with my 3-year-old, he came to visit. Naturally, he had to rearrange the furniture. Then he said the pile of shoes near the front door was unsightly.

I remember shrugging as I told him that I did not live in a magazine. And this- I pointed to my messy shoes- was what living life looked like.

Change is Messy

Recently, I’ve been rearranging furniture in my house. Remember? Yup, giant disaster area spreading into multiple rooms!

It often gets worse before it can get organized and put together! But in the end, it’s worth it.

See what I mean when I say living life is messy?

So why not embrace it?

Be excited about it.

Recognize it as a sign that you are engaging in life, being present, manifesting, and actively living.

It’s way more fun.
